DVSA's Autumn Update: What Record Test Numbers and ADI Strain Mean for Your Driving School

The DVSA has had a busy few weeks. Between record-breaking test delivery figures, an unusually candid admission about pressure on instructor services, and the first live trial of a brand-new booking platform, there’s a lot for driving instructors and school owners to take in. Here’s what’s actually changed, and what it means for how you run and market your business over the coming months.

Test numbers are up, but waits are still long for most learner drivers

The catch is that waiting times haven’t caught up for everyone. In August, only 40% of learners waited less than seven weeks between booking and sitting their test, meaning six in ten are still waiting longer. For your pupils, that’s a real planning issue, and it’s worth being upfront with them about realistic timelines rather than letting frustration build. It’s also a good moment to make sure your own availability and test-readiness messaging are clear and current on your website and Google Business Profile, since prospective learners are increasingly comparing schools on how quickly they can get pupils test-ready.

DVSA admits ADI capacity is under pressure

Less positive is the DVSA’s own admission that services for approved driving instructors need to improve. Applications to become an ADI have risen 152% since 2018/19, but Part 3 pass rates have fallen from 33.8% in 2023/24 to 27.7% in 2025/26, and most instructors missed their standards checks in 2024/25. The agency says it plans to recruit more examiners, look at alternative routes into examiner roles, and review the qualifying process, but has been honest that “pressures are likely to continue in the coming months.”

If you’re training to qualify, supervising trainees, or thinking about growing your team, it’s worth building extra slack into your timelines this autumn rather than assuming the current bottlenecks will clear quickly.

A new booking platform is being tested

The DVSA also completed its first live trial of a new Driver Services Platform, at Durham test centre in July, with 14 learners and 11 volunteer instructors involved. Early results were encouraging: bookings synced correctly with examiners’ tablets and licences were issued promptly. But this is still early-stage testing, focused on car tests for now, with no confirmed date for wider rollout. Nothing changes for your day-to-day booking process yet, but it’s one to watch.

Turning DVSA news into a marketing edge

None of this changes overnight, but schools that communicate clearly about wait times, pass rates, and availability tend to build more trust with nervous learners and their parents. A regularly updated blog or news section, paired with strong local search visibility, helps prospective pupils find accurate, current information about your school rather than outdated advice from elsewhere. If you’d like help keeping your online presence current and visible as these DVSA changes play out, get in touch – it’s exactly what we help driving schools with every day.
